Uphill battle for help with speech problems

Many parents have to fight to get the right help for their young children's speech, language and communication difficulties, a Government report has found.

A review by Conservative MP John Bercow said in its initial findings that early intervention was essential but was not always recognised as a priority by children's services, including health and education.

The report said, 'Despite the hard work and commitment of many professionals, too many families find the experience of securing and maintaining support for their children difficult, protracted and stressful.'

There were 2,000 responses to the call for evidence online, with almost half from families, showing that many parents have strong views on current service provision.

The review team also visited children's centres, nurseries and schools and held consultation groups with parents, children and young people.
