Wales changes care standards

Legislation affecting playgroups in Wales is to be changed by the Welsh Assembly. The changes to the regulations and minimum standards that playgroups must meet are the first part of a review of the national standards for daycare and childminding in Wales. Speaking at the national Eisteddfod last week, health and social care minister Jane Hutt said that in the autumn there was to be 'a review of the regulations and minimum standards'.

The Welsh Assembly intended to change the legislation regarding playgroups 'as fast as we can', Ms Hutt said. She added that this was because as things stood the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW) had been forced 'to treat voluntary committee members as if they personally were going to look after children', when they only wanted 'to serve their community, help the development of local children, and support the Welsh language'.
