Website makes splash on safety

* A swimming and water safety website is one of a number of Government initiatives to encourage more primary school children in England to learn to swim that were unveiled last week by early years minister Catherine Ashton. Other initiatives include a swimming charter to advise schools on the length of time they should allocate to lessons, training in water safety and health and safety at the pool. The charter, to be published next year, will suggest ways to encourage children to participate in classes and encourage girls, especially those from minority ethnic communities.

Baroness Ashton said, 'It is essential that children are aware of the principles and skills of water safety, which is why swimming is a compulsory part of the national curriculum for all children aged between five and 11.' The website is at www.nc.uk.net/safeswimming.
