Nursery World - What children gain

I have read with interest the debate for and against Early Years Professional status. During my 20-year career I have read with sadness and disappointment a number of debates over who has the best qualification. This is sad, because sometimes the focus is not on what the children will gain from the increased knowledge and skills.

I started my career as a volunteer in a playgroup and having children of my own was my experience. But I learned a lot more when I completed my nursery nurse training because I gained underpinning knowledge. As my family grew, I increased my skills, worked longer hours and updated my knowledge through workshops until embarking on a degree in 1999.

My experience stood me in good stead, but I also learned how to lead and manage people. The degree gave me a deeper understanding of children's learning and development, which I was able to put to good use and share my knowledge while supporting staff.
