What shall we do now?

January is a time for looking to the year ahead, and here's a great gift for children to make that will also help friends and family to remember those important dates. You will need a selection of at least 14 family photographs, an exercise book and a pocket-sized 2003 calendar, which can be picked up very cheaply from your local Post Office or stationery supplier.

You will need a selection of at least 14 family photographs, an exercise book and a pocket-sized 2003 calendar, which can be picked up very cheaply from your local Post Office or stationery supplier.

First of all, carefully open the staples in the centre of the exercise book and remove the cover and double sets of pages until only 12 remain (don't discard the pages you take out - they can be stapled together to make another calendar). Now, replace the staples and turn the pages so that they open at the bottom.

Here comes the fun part! Open the first page up and let the children decorate this section as January, using appropriate seasonal images and colours. Next, glue a family photo or two to the top page (if you don't want to use originals, scan them into a computer and print copies). In the bottom half, stick the calendar page from January, and circle any important dates, such as birthdays or anniversaries. Then it's time to turn the page, and do the same for February.
