Why the wait?

Further to Sarah Baker's letter 'Giving up on Ofsted' (27 March), after being made redundant in December 2002, I decided it was time for a change. Having my own three-year-old made finding the perfect nanny position much harder, so I looked into childminding.

I attended the 12-hour Introducing Childminding Practice course in January and, like Sarah, I too found it tedious and humiliating. Having trained for two years full-time to become an NNEB, I am still wondering what 12 hours can teach a potential childcarer.

I am now waiting for Ofsted to sort out my registration. Yet even though I already have a current Disclosure from the Criminal Records Bureau, that seems to have made no difference to the length of time this has taken.

There seems to be a demand for childminders in the area where I live because of nursery closures, so why is Ofsted being so slow?
