Wide response on smacking and rights

* More than 500 submissions were made to the public consultation on the physical punishment of children in Northern Ireland launched by the Office of Law Reform last September. Dr Sean Farren, minister of finance and personnel, said, 'There are difficult issues here, issues which invoke strong feelings in many people, and the consultation was the means by which those feelings could be communicated to those charged with deciding the way ahead.'

A second public consultation, on having a Commissioner for Children and Young People, has found 'overwhelming support' for it. Virtually all respondents said they welcomed the Northern Ireland Executive's decision to set up the post.
