Workload agreement in peril

Funding shortfalls, legal action and strikes could hit the implementation of the Government's new workload agreement in England's primary schools. The agreement, set to begin this week, has been designed to transfer some of teachers' responsibilities to teaching assistants and classroom assistants, including some nursery nurses.

But the National Association of Head Teachers (NAHT) warned last week that some schools may not be able to adhere to the agreement because of the ongoing funding difficulties that came to light earlier this year. Dr Rona Tutt, NAHT vice-president, said, 'The question of money is very complex - it is there and it is not there. The funding crisis still affects this financial year, but we are expecting things to improve as we will be able to take on more staff.
