SERVICE CHILDREN

I read with interest 'Children's needs on the frontline' (Analysis, 11 February). As a service wife and mother, early years teacher and chair of governors at a local primary school, which has 75 per cent service children on roll, I have long felt that the needs of service children and their families are often overlooked by the majority of the population.

This is understandable. Unless you have lived the lifestyle or been closely associated with the military, you may be unaware of the problems. Causes of concern include: admissions, frequent school/setting moves, a mismatch of curricula leading to gaps in children's knowledge, and emotional and behavioural problems. Another major concern at present is the impact on children of parental deployment.
