Letters: We're in it together

I believe Jon Richards' column (20 September) responding to Purnima Tanuku's 'Profit or Loss' feature (13 September) highlights a division in understanding.

Public-private partnerships have existed for decades across many sectors, including in childcare for at least 20 years. The sources of a good life are increasingly to be found in the quality of our relationships with each other and in the conduct of purposeful, rewarding work.

The financial success of organisations now relies on the wholehearted engagement of employees. The John Lewis constitution, for example, is a fair illustration of the extent to which partnership creates a different kind of business - 'The partnership's ultimate purpose is the happiness of all its members through their worthwhile and satisfying employment in a successful business'.
