Opinion: Editor's view

The early years sector should press its case with a Government that desperately needs supporters.

With the Labour Government performing poorly in the opinion polls, andeven worse in by-elections, and with a general election not that faraway, it appears to be a good time to push for concessions on issuesthat concern you.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families certainly seems keento generate positive headlines and minimise the negative. In the pasttwo weeks, we have seen a climbdown on the huge increases planned forOfsted registration fees, a 'delay' to the controversial guidance ontracking children's progress in the Early Years Foundation Stage, andnow movements on two aspects of the EYFS that have prompted protests(see News, page 4).

The two literacy goals to be reviewed by Sir Jim Rose as part of hisreview of the primary curriculum have caused early years experts aheadache since the first draft of the new framework, and indeed furtherback, as they were in the Foundation Stage already. The goals are justtoo advanced for most children, and tend to lead to inappropriatepractice. However, despite repeated calls for them to be reconsidered, there has been not a flicker of interest from the Government, untilnow.
