LETTER OF THE WEEK - WHAT MEN WILL GAIN

Nursery World's online forums lately are full of posts and replies that are so helpful (www.nurseryworld.co.uk). So well done, Nursery World.

But I am writing about men in childcare, and I think it's worth bursting the bubble on the myth that low pay is the main factor that puts men off a career in childcare. Yes, most pay in the private childcare sector is low, and the Government does need to address this. Would your MP work for a nursery nurses' salary?

However, I can't put my finger on one main reason why men do not train for a career in childcare. It could be reactions from parents, working with female staff or awkward managers. But surely there should be more help from the Government. They should take a lead.
