Let's oppose Rose

In response to Lesley Staggs' letter (18 June), I agree that Beveley Hughes is trying to defend the indefensible. There is much for early years professionals to be concerned about at the moment as we witness the slow erosion of what was supposed to be a developmentally appropriate curriculum.

Twice now, Rose has intervened in an area in which he has no expertise, making recommendations that are both inappropriate and potentially damaging to the under-fives. His suggestion that a single point of entry will be a panacea for the 'penalty which many summer-born children experience' is, as Lesley Staggs points out, simply not supported by the evidence.
