Courses in work with birth to threes

Now part of the Early Years Foundation Stage, Birth to Threes continues to provide a vital focus for ongoing professional development.

ACORN CHILDCARE TRAINING

- Activities for the under-twos: one-day course for practitioners new to this age group. Topics include play and development, heuristic play, treasure baskets and evaluating equipment.

- Activities for the under-twos - advanced: one-day course for experienced carers. Topics similar to those above.

- Activities for under-threes: one-day course for newcomers to early years care. Topics similar to those above.

- Working with babies: two-day course for those new to the care of babies. Topics include developing an understanding of babies' development from birth to one year and effective techniques for communication.

- Knowledge and understanding of the world (0-3 years): one-day course exploring how best to deliver the areas of learning for children under three years.

CRECHENDO TRAINING

- Advanced practice in working with babies: Crechendo has been validated to run this CACHE course.

EARLY EDUCATION TRAINING AND RESOURCE CENTRE

A number of courses including:

- Early development, interactions and behaviour: focuses on a child-centred, holistic, dynamic and maturational persepctive - for all practitioners and trainers across the early years sector.

EARLY YEARS ORGANISATION

- Working with under-threes: 7.5-hour course examining the developing skills of babies and toddlers with regard to play materials.

- The High/Scope curriculum implementation course: ten-day course delivered over approximately ten months, aimed at those working with infants and toddlers.

HIGH/SCOPE IRELAND

- High/Scope Infant-toddler Curriculum Course: flexible and comprehensive 18-day course which covers the High/Scope curriculum and topics like Active Learning for Infants and Toddlers in Child Care Settings and Supportive Adult-Child Interaction with Infants and Toddlers.

NATIONAL LITERACY TRUST

- Why the First Three Years Last Forever: this Talk to Your Baby conference (October 09) highlights the power of early brain development and what clever communicators babies are. Participants will learn about the vital links between the maturing brain and early communication development, highlighting the establishment of secure infant mental health.

MATERNITY AND NANNY TRAINING (MNT)

- Baby care for nannies: one-day course for nannies, maternity nurses, nursery nurses and new parents. Topics include general care, bedtime routines and sleeping, feeding, colic and reflux, interaction with siblings and minor ailments.

- The maternity nanny practitioner: 2.5 days of formal teaching, plus pre-reading and post-course assessment for experienced professionals. Leads to a formally accredited qualification in maternity nursing on successful completion. Covers the care of newborns and post-natal mothers, and how to gain employment in the maternity sector. Does not cover basics such as bathing and bottle feeding.

- Postnatal depression: one-day course covering the condition, signs and symptoms, risk factors for PND, how to support sufferers and their families and accessing help.

- Care of multiples: one-day course covering caring for twins and multiple births, premature and other special-care babies, including feeding and sleeping and establishing routines.

- Sleep training: one-day course covering normal and healthy sleep habits and sleep problems.

MONTESSORI CENTRE INTERNATIONAL

- Infant toddler course: part-time and distance-learning course designed to develop a high level of professional competence in students wishing to extend their training as facilitators of the Montessori method for children.

MUSIC FOR STARTERS

- Making Music with Babies: practitioners on this course will explore musical activities that can be used with children up to 12 months, as a sensory and participatory exercise.

NATIONAL CHILDBIRTH TRUST

The National Childbirth Trust (NCT) provides information and practical support on all aspects of pregnancy, childbirth and early parenthood. It has 400 branches and its training arm is NHS Connect, which runs workshops around the country.

NATIONAL CHILDREN'S BUREAU

- Introduction to listening to young children: the aim of this course is to gain understanding of the importance of listening to young children and involving them in decisions that affect them. It is aimed at practitioners working with birth to fives.

- Babies to Threes: this one-day training course will emphasise the importance of relationships and experiences in the first year. The course covers the early development of self-concept, baby/adult interactions and the foundations of early learning, relating issues to participants' own work experience and professional development.

NATIONAL DAY NURSERIES ASSOCIATION (NDNA)

- Enriching play and learning for 0 to 2-year-olds: one-day courses aimed at Level 2 practitioners. It focuses on play and learning in the EYFS and on environments that enrich the child's play and learning experience.

THE SCHOOL OF INFANT MENTAL HEALTH

- Foundation course: 16-hour introduction to infant mental health and parent-infant psychotherapy.

- Infant research and infant psychiatry: 30 hours each, these are observation-based seminars
