A month in the life of Harry Tobias

Harry has had his MMR jab this month, a little later than planned due to his chickenpox and hospital appointments. Initially he was fine, but on day nine he became very pale and pink-eyed. He also had a raised temperature. This lasted for three days, but he has been fine since.
Harry has had his MMR jab this month, a little later than planned due to his chickenpox and hospital appointments. Initially he was fine, but on day nine he became very pale and pink-eyed. He also had a raised temperature.

This lasted for three days, but he has been fine since.

Harry has had his blood tested and his blood pressure checked this month to keep a check on his kidney function. All results were within normal parameters.

At times Harry has quite severe diarrhoea and this has been raised with the health visitor. As there are close relatives on both sides of his family with the condition coeliac, Harry is being monitored in case he too is affected.

Harry now indicates when he has had a bowel movement and needs his nappy changed. He is happy to sit on either his potty or a child-sized toilet seat, and has had some success.

He continues to learn new words and now names his drink (dink), baby, pillow and door. He likes to 'Moooo' like a cow, lifting his chin up like he has seen cows do.

Questions

1 Why does the age at which bowel and bladder control is attained vary so much from child to child?

2 What is coeliac disease, and what would this mean for Harry if he is affected?

3 Harry loves to be active. What would you provide for him to help the development of his large motor skills?

Answers to part 19 questions (20 October 2005)

1 Attending a toddler group will help Harry in building the social skills he needs within a group of similar-age children. He is able to take those first all-important steps away from the security of his mother, to play independently alongside others. The opportunities to join in group singing and story times will help prepare him for his attendance at pre-school later on.

2 With the arrival of a new sibling just a few weeks away, Harry is being helped to prepare for this significant event in his life by being involved in getting things ready - sorting baby clothes with mummy, choosing a teddy to put in the cot and so on. Doll play is already being encouraged and books on having a baby in the family are being read to both Harry and his sister Jasmine.
