Acorn launches pilot to fill training gap

Acorn Childcare Training is piloting a range of affordable courses in Hampshire that are designed to fill the gap left by reductions to local authority training.

The statutory and specialist early years open courses for individuals and organisations are being trialled in the county from next month. They aim to take the pressure off local authorities by delivering essential training that complements, rather than replaces, the existing courses that are available.

If the training proves successful, Acorn Childcare Training hopes to roll out a similar programme nationwide.

Doral Hayes, operational director of Acorn Childcare Training, explained that it launched the courses in response to growing demand for specialist training in Hampshire, with a focus on affordability and flexibility.

She said, 'We understand that the Government is working to rescue the UK economy, but as a consequence an increasing number of budgets are being squeezed and essential training is being cut. However, if training isn't delivered, staff won't be learning and developing and neither will the children in their care, which is unacceptable for everyone concerned.

'The courses are tailored and affordable so people can still access the quality training they need and the skills they require to do the best job possible.'

The short courses range in price from £50 to £89 plus VAT. They include the Level 2 Award in Food Safety, First Aid in Childcare, Implementing Health and Safety in a Childcare Setting, Preparing for Ofsted, and Leadership and Management in Childcare.

The training company will measure the success of the pilot by the rate of take-up and from participants' feedback.
