The nursery, ‘Careshare at Port Hamilton’, has temporarily closed to allow Police Scotland to carry out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
The incident took place yesterday.
A spokesperson for Busy Bees said, ‘It is with great sadness that we can confirm the death of a child attending our Port Hamilton nursery. The 13-month-old girl was found to have stopped breathing by one of our staff. An ambulance was called immediately and the child was taken to Edinburgh’s Royal Hospital for Sick Children but despite the best efforts of medical staff sadly she could not be revived.
Marg Randles, managing director at Busy Bees Nurseries, the parent group of Careshare, said, ‘Our thoughts and sincere condolences are with the family at this very sad time. We will do all we can to support the family and those affected by this tragedy and we are working alongside all the relevant agencies to help find the cause.
‘I’d like to thank the members of the emergency services for their help and support and also to recognise the efforts of our staff at Port Hamilton nursery. The safety and care of children at our nurseries is our highest priority and yesterday’s tragedy has affected us all.’
A spokesperson for the Care Inspectorate said, ‘The death of any child is always distressing and tragic.
‘We were informed yesterday by a nursery in Edinburgh that a child attending their service had very sadly died.
‘Our thoughts are with the child's loved ones and everyone affected. Police Scotland are currently investigating this matter.’
Busy Bees acquired the 90-place 'Careshare at Port Hamilton' nursery, from Just Learning in 2012. It is rated five by the Care Inspectorate, the equivalent of a good grade from Ofsted.
