Development wheel to support children's speech and language

Harrow council has launched a new version of their development wheel that will focus on speech and language in the early years.

The speech and language development wheel will be the fourth wheel created by the council, who, two years ago launched their birth to five wheel themed around keeping young children healthy and safe.

Originally produced for parents, carers and practitioners within the London borough, the Birth to Five Wheel became popular among other early years teams within local councils and over 100,000 have now been sold throughout the UK.

The new wheel aims to help early years practitioners, parents and others who care for children, aged 6 months to five-years-old, aid the development of a young child’s language skills.

Based on the same design of the other wheels, the centre rivet of the Speech and Language Wheel allows the parent or carer to twist it around to the age bracket they are interested in.

Each age bracket features a list of what a child may be able to do at, such as play on their own or respond to their name at 12-months-old, listen to a story and follow simple instructions at age two, and independently say "hello" and "bye" and understand 'who' questions at four-years-old.

Further information

The Speech and Language Wheel costs £2.99 each, plus £1.25 for postage and packing.
