Grants available for projects that boost vitamin D in children

Early years practitioners can apply for a grant of up to 5,000 to fund projects that raise awareness of the importance of vitamin D and boost the intake in pre-school children.

The Feeding for Life Foundation’s 2013 promoting Best Practice grant scheme provides funding for early years practitioners and healthcare professionals to develop and support on-going initiatives concerned with vitamin D.

Grants of £100 - £5,000 are available for projects that raise awareness of the importance of vitamin D and the practical approaches, such as supplementation, fortification of foods and sunlight, needed to address the shortfall of vitamin D and support increased intake in children under five.

A survey carried out by Feeding for Life Foundation (FfLF) last year found that only 40 per cent of parents are aware of Government recommendations that children aged six months to five years should be taking a daily vitamin D supplement.

Pinki Sahota, professor of nutrition and obesity at Leeds Metropolitan University and chair of the Feeding for Life Foundation, said, ‘Supporting best practice and providing practical resources to improve awareness and intake of vitamin D is a key priority for the FfLf.

‘The local grants enable those working with the under-fives to provide practical, tailored support and education to improve vitamin D intake in their community.’

The closing dates for applications are Friday 5 July and Monday 2 December.
