Gyimah's brief at DfE confirmed

Monday, June 1, 2015

The responsibilities of the childcare and education minister have been confirmed, alongside those of the other ministers in the Department for Education.

Nicky Morgan as secretary of state for education has overall responsibility for the department.

Sam Gyimah, parliamentary under-secretary of state for childcare and education, has a remit that includes:

  • expanding free childcare from 15 to 30 hours per week for working parents of three- and four-year-olds;
  • school funding (including fair funding, pupil premium and revenue funding for all schools);
  • reducing child poverty;
  • child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS);
  • careers advice.

Under the previous Coalition government, the responsibilities for ‘early years education and the EYFS’ were listed separately as part of the childcare and education minister’s brief. These are not specifically listed under any minister's brief now.

However, a Department for Education spokesperson confirmed to Nursery World that Mr Gyimah’s responsibilities did include the EYFS, because his remit was early education.

Schools minister Nick Gibb’s role includes: teachers and school leaders; curriculum, assessment and qualifications; school accountability; reducing school underperformance and improving schools-to-school support; school admissions, exclusions, behaviour and attendance and alternative provision.

Edward Timpson, children and families minister, will cover child protection and social care; children in care, care leavers and adoption; special educational needs and disabilities (SEND); character and resilience, including bullying, cadets and military ethos; school sport and personal, social and health education (PSHE).

Nick Boles, skills minister, has responsibilities including further education, apprenticeships and traineeships, National Colleges and the Skills Funding Agency.

Lord Nash, the minister in the House of Lords, has a remit that includes academies and free schools, dealing with extremism, and school places.
