Interest shown in academies
Tuesday, June 8, 2010
More than 1,000 schools have applied to become academies following the Department for Education's plan to expand the scheme.
Among those interested are 273 primary schools and 52 special schools, who may be able to set their own pay and conditions for staff and be free of the national curriculum. Maintained nursery schools and early years settings are ineligible (News, 3 June).
