New nursery operation is all in the family

The Riverbank Day Nursery in Melton Mowbray is to be operated by six relatives who will be using their different areas of expertise to make sure the setting gets off to a flying start.

Carol and Neil Cartwright, and their son and daughter-in-law Jeremy and Sylvia, are the joint owners of the new nursery. Accompanying them in running it will be Carol's sister-in-law Barbara, who has taken on the role of manager, and daughter Nicola, who is the nursery's cook.

The only member of staff to be recruited so far who is unrelated to the Cartwrights is deputy manager Dawn Richardson.

The setting, which is registered to take 38 children and is located next to a school, officially opens on 28 September.

Carol Cartwright, who is also a childminder, said, 'We are very excited about the nursery launch, but quite nervous as well. We have been trying to get the building looking just right. We held our first open afternoon on Wednesday 9 September, and a lot of parents came to have a look around, so hopefully places will start to fill.'

The nursery building has just been renovated by Leicestershire County Council, which owns the lease for the property.

It now features two main rooms, an outside covered play area and a large enclosed playground, where children can also grow vegetables. The nursery also has access to the school's facilities and playing fields.
