No rubber stamp

As an Ofsted childcare inspector I am interested in the question of registering nannies, as it would be my colleagues and myself who would have to do the job (News, 17 January). Your cartoon (Letters, 31 January) shows an official simply rubber-stamping documents. I imagine that the actual process would be more complex.

Police-checking applicants is now fairly simple, but would nanny applicants require a 'suitable person' interview and appropriate childcare qualifications? Would an inspector have to inspect the home where the nanny was caring for the children? Would there be an annual inspection? Would it be an offence for a parent to employ a nanny who had been de-registered?

It is perfectly fair for nannies to be regulated as other childcare workers are. I do hope that the practical problems are properly thought through before any major decisions are made.
