For some years now there has been a growing debate on whether there should be a national childcare workers register that includes nannies.

The idea is that it would only have on it 'approved' nannies who have gone through checks of their records with the police, local authorities and health services. It would cover the whole country, so unsuitable people could not simply move from one area to another to avoid detection. It would cover all types of childcare, so that people could not move from one type of childcare where they had been banned to an unregulated area where they had not, and it would also verify all aspects of an applicant's CV, including identity, training, education and previous employment.
