- A day for fun

St Cuthbert's and Palatine Children's Centre in Blackpool entertainedmore than 160 children and their parents at their fun day last month.Activities included jewellery making, arts and crafts, role play, facepainting and a visit from a children's entertainer.

- Graduation party

Gaynes Park Children's Day Nursery in Upminster, Essex, said goodbye topupils moving up to big school with a graduation and garden party. Thenursery raised 250 from the event, which was donated to theLennox Children's Cancer Fund.

- Stay awake, staff

Staff at Teddies Nursery in Basingstoke, Hampshire, took part in asponsored 'stay awake' last month to raise money for the company'scharity, the Bright Horizons Foundation for Children. Nine members ofstaff worked a full day and stayed awake for 24 hours at nursery. So farthey have raised over 600.

- Awards for health

Nine Busy Bees nurseries in Lancashire have received the nationallyaccredited Lancashire Healthy Schools award, which aims to raiseeducational achievement and improve health. The nurseries collatedevidence of extra-curricular activities including dance, music andlanguage lessons, created allotments and sensory gardens, started pupilforums, and worked in partnership with parents to put together a list ofrecommended healthy snacks. Each of the nurseries will be presented withan award and plaque to mark their achievements.

- Beastly fun

Children from kidsunlimited North Cheam in Surrey enjoyed learning aboutmini-beasts this month. They went on a nature walk in a nearby forestwhere they collected insects, and built a mini-beast den. They also hada visit from the company Jungletrex, who brought in various insects andanimals from the rainforest for everyone to observe and hold.

- Olympic achievement

Children from Smart Tots Nursery in Banbury, Oxfordshire, held an ArtiesOlympics Day to raise funds for the British Heart Foundation. Wetweather forced the event to be moved indoors, but the children heartilyenjoyed taking part in aerobics sessions and welly-throwing.

- Handa's Surprise

The Little Angel Theatre's production of 'Handa's Surprise' for twotofive-year-olds is touring theatres across the country from 2 October to31 December. The play is based on the popular children's book by EileenBrowne. The tour visits Crawley, London, Coventry, Colchester, Harrow,Nottingham, Manchester, Bath and Lancaster. Children and parents from the kidsunlimited nursery in Chelsea, London,were surrounded by elephants at Chelsea Royal Hospital, where they wentto see an exhibition of 20 model pachyderms that were previouslydisplayed across London before being auctioned off. Back at nursery, thechildren painted their favourite elephants.
