Nurseries offer parents strike day childcare

Private nurseries and childminders across the country are stepping in to offer emergency care for school children during tomorrow's public sector strike.

Education secretary Michael Gove has said that at least 90 per cent of schools will close tomorrow because of the strike action.

According to public sector union Unison, 400 nursery schools and 6,700 schools with nursery classes will be affected. On the basis of 90 per cent of schools closing, the union estimates that 6,000 council nurseries will be affected and around 30,000 nursery workers will be on strike.

Nursery group Bertram is offering emergency childcare at several of its settings, with an extra 40 places available for primary children at its three Holyrood Nurseries in Manchester and Liverpool. Most of their out-of-school services will also be open for a full day.
