Masterclasses

Friday 10 May 9.15am-12.15pm

SEND in the early years: a child’s route to support

With early years settings caring for rising numbers of children with emerging special needs, this masterclass aims to help practitioners understand and support the learning and developmental needs of the ‘unique child’.

Some of the key speakers from our highly successful full-day conference on ‘SEND in the early years’ will return to present the masterclass, helping early years practitioners to understand the essentials of inclusive practice, navigate the route from ‘first observation’ to ‘personalised plan’, make the most of current funding and training and develop their understanding of sensory processing problems experienced by many children with SEND.

Julie Revels, an early years consultant specialising in SEND and inclusive practice, will revisit the principles of high-quality universal inclusive practice and discuss why practitioners must embed child-centred practices in their provision and challenge the efficacy of the ‘traditional’ one-to-one model of support in improving young children’s outcomes.

Michele Barrett, head teacher at Randolph Beresford and Vanessa Nursery School in London, will provide advice on noticing and acting on the early signs of developmental delay in a young child, working with parents and engaging with other professionals and securing additional funding.

A session on sensory processing and how difficulties can be managed by nurseries will be led by Anne O’Connor, early years consultant and author specialising in the prime areas of physical and emotional development, and Dr Kath Dickinson, owner of SEND to Learn in Morpeth, Northumberland.

Saturday 11 May 9.15am-12.15pm

Helping children achieve: challenge and progression in children’s learning

Through the EYFS, the Government aims to enable every child to ‘make good progress’ and ‘fulfil their potential’, therefore improving outcomes for all and closing the attainment gap. Success rests on providing progression and challenge in children’s learning.

This masterclass brings together leading early years experts to show how practitioners can tune into a child’s developmental and learning needs, plan and help children achieve appropriate ‘next steps’, and create a variety of rich and imaginative environments that will enhance children’s motivation to learn.

Kym Scott, early years consultant and trainer, will help delegates develop an understanding of how best to provide for progression and challenge in a child’s learning, with a focus on the optimal conditions for creating self-regulating learners, the keys to excellent outcomes in areas such as maths and literacy, and how to evidence progression and challenge for Ofsted.

Kathryn Solly, early years consultant and trainer, will lead a session on risk, challenge and adventure outdoors, and award-winning Little Barn Owls nursery group in West Sussex will provide a case study.

Seminars

Our fantastic programme of seminars will cover topics spanning all areas of the early years, including block play, school readiness, music, small-world play, maths, under-threes and self-regulation. Expert speakers include Penny Tassoni, Alice Sharp, Daniel Spry, Barbara Isaacs and Julie Mountain.
