Nursery nurse at Tinies Day Nursery in Gloucester

Emily was recently named Early Years Apprentice of the Year at the fifth annual Lifetime Learner Achievement Awards.

How does it feel to win Apprentice of the Year?

It’s really satisfying just to be recognised for doing my daily job. I get a lot of support and praise within the setting, but it’s lovely to have national recognition for my work.

Why did you decide to do an apprenticeship?

I was taking a year out and had planned to study fine art at university. I started working with children to gain experience towards becoming an art therapist, but as soon as I started, I knew this was what I wanted to do. The apprenticeship suited me because I am an independent learner and the hands-on approach made me feel like I was in control of my learning.

What have you gained?

Confidence. Learning and working at the same time has helped me confidently apply my knowledge. It has also given me some career direction; I was able to get a feel for the job and the setting and think about my future. I would recommend it to anyone looking to work in childcare, I think it gives you an edge, and the support and guidance from colleagues is invaluable.

What are your plans?

Since qualifying, as well as working, I am studying for a foundation degree in early childhood studies. After I finish I can move on to a Bachelor’s degree and work towards becoming a primary school Reception teacher. It’s my ambition to complete a PGCE, but I’d be happy in my current job if it was forever.
