Julie Lister, manager, Portland Nurseries, Huddersfield

What would you consider your biggest achievement in 20 years at Portland Nurseries?

Progressing through my career from senior of the baby room to being one of the senior managers in the company. Having the opportunity to work across all age groups with an amazing team has enabled me to support the setting to develop and grow. I have had the privilege to work with many families over the years and recently one of my first children returned to enrol her own baby into the nursery.

How did getting a degree in Childcare Management change your practice?

It enabled me to reinforce a holistic view of children's learning and development, value staff's contribution, support their professional development, and reward and celebrate their achievements. It also allowed me to devise and deliver bespoke in-house training courses.

What advice would you give to childcare professionals getting started?

Working in childcare is a truly rewarding vocation; there are many opportunities for staff to grow professionally while continuing to work in a childcare environment. You are never too old to get your books out and continue learning. Rich life experiences can help your ability to study and learn.
