Room senior, Village Nursery, Trafford Park, Manchester

What inspired you to start working at the nursery?

Since school I’ve always wanted to work with children. The particular course I took was the NMCW one. Since training and the placement attached to this, I was set on working with early years children. Luckily I got offered the job at Village Nursery in 1997.

How has the nursery changed?

When I first came it was a smaller nursery, and there weren’t as many children there. The new owners have since doubled the size of the place and increased the group size. This is a bit of a challenge as this means more children (there are 131 in the whole nursery setting), but working in the pre-school room with around 36 children is fab.

What is your fondest memory?

Everything about the nursery is a fond memory, so I wouldn’t say I have a particular one. The impact we make on the children in helping them learn is such a lovely feeling in itself.

I think celebrating the 20th anniversary of the nursery in 2016 was also quite memorable. The carnival that we organised to celebrate was great. Even past Village Nursery children came back to visit. I had managed to stay in touch with a few of them on social media, and so arranged for them to come back and see how far their nursery had come since they were around. It was quite special.

What’s next for you?

I’m hoping to be here for as long as I can, as I really enjoy working where I do. The job is constantly challenging, and that has really inspired me to keep bettering myself. As groups are much larger than previously, it’s become more of a challenge to provide individual support and stimulation for each child. Challenges are positive, and can only lead to achievement. I’m currently studying for my Early Years Level 5/Foundation degree.
