Opinion: In my view - Top of the techno class

Technology is everywhere, from when the radio wakes us in the morning, to when we check e-mails, visit websites, make telephone calls and watch TV. It is essential that we equip the next generation with the skills and understanding they will need to thrive in this increasingly digital world.

Without an appropriate emphasis on technology in learning from an early age, there is the risk of a digital underclass developing, lacking opportunities and knowledge to make wide-ranging use of technology.

The publication of the Rose Review was welcome news. It recommends that computer and technology skills should move to centre stage alongside English, maths and personal skills in an overhaul of England's primary curriculum.

Becta believes that technology should be built into all subjects to support teaching and enhance children's development. We recommended to Jim Rose that not only should the curriculum include an increased emphasis on skills in using technology, but also for children to get a deeper understanding of how to utilise these skills for their own learning - not just the skills to use Google but how to make sense of the results of their search.

While the traditional core skills of reading and writing must always remain at the heart of learning, we must recognise that there is a wealth of technology available that can complement traditional skills and aid teaching.

In a changing world, one thing that is certain for the future is that technology is going to become increasingly integral to daily life and vital for the success of the UK economy. It's essential that every child is well equipped to become part of a society dominated by technology. As Jim Rose put it, technology is an essential skill for life, for everyone.
