I work in a pre-school in a village hall. We have a fairly secure car park we use for outdoor play. We have lots of barriers to overcome as our landlord doesn't let us keep anything outside and it is just a concrete car park. However, as long as the children are outside and we haul out water, compost, buckets and spades etc, the learning is fantastic. I can honestly say it has revolutionised our setting and I would urge anyone to access the outside as much as possible. Some of our best sessions are on rainy days. The concentration and learning provided by a puddle is amazing.

We have recently sent out booklets for the parents to fill in and returnto us about their children, their likes and dislikes etc. We are nowtaking ideas from these booklets to start us off with our individualplanning. Hopefully once this is in place we can then look forward toplanning activities for the children's own interests and build on theirexperiences.

On my planning sheets I jot down the initials of the particularchild/children for whom I am carrying out a certain activity and makesure they attend the setting on the day it is planned for. This meansyou can plan ahead some things for the week, but mainly do the planningat the end of each day from what you have seen the children doing theprevious day.
