Aleading child protection charity has joined campaigners calling on the Government to introduce a national register of all childcarers, including nannies. The National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) has added its voice to campaigners calling for a register. The move follows two separate court cases last month involving a childminder and a nanny.

New meets old at New Lanark

(Photograph) - Children can explore all the colours of the rainbow at a new gallery on the site of the world's first nursery school in Scotland. New Lanark, on the banks of the River Clyde, was awarded World Heritage status at the end of last year. It became famous as a model community in the early 19th century under the management of Robert Owen, who introduced social and educational reforms for the benefit of mill workers, including a progressive school where corporal punishment was banned and young children were given the freedom to play and socialise.

Closures top agenda for campaigners

Nursery school closures are again set to be a central issue at the National Campaign for real Nursery Education's (NCrNE) annual parliamentary meeting on Wednesday 7 March. The group, which comprises more than 200 members, campaigns for the preservation of nursery education, wanting all staff to be qualified in the Foundation Stage and any provider of nursery education to have a qualified teacher.

The first chair of the new Ofsted Board has been named by the DfES. Zenna Atkins, currently an executive consultant for Social Solutions, which promotes entrepreneurialism and social enterprise, will be working with Christine Gilbert, the newly-appointed Chief Inspector of Schools, and up to ten other board members who have yet to be announced.

England's Children's Commissioner Al Aynsley-Green officially opened the 1m Willow Children's Centre in Wembley, London. A jazz band was on hand to play the centre's own theme song, while children did a performance of their own. As the flagship children's centre for the London Borough of Brent, the building is fitted with environmentally-friendly solar panels to provide its outside lighting, and has a high-dependency suite complete with sensory rooms which are designed for children with SEN. The Willow centre offers 100 childcare places.

Organised by the local Bookstart team, it included arts and crafts, Chinese food and visiting storytellers from the Chinese Arts Centre in Manchester.

Closing nurseries saves BBC 4m

The BBC is saving more than 4m by closing down its workplace nurseries and plans to spend the money on programming, Nursery World has learned. Trade unions BECTU and the National Union of Journalists have collected more than 1,200 signatures against the proposal for phased closures of seven subsidised nurseries announced by the BBClast year (News, 14 December 2006). The closures will begin in late 2007 and the last nursery will shut in 2010.

A training programme for staff working with children to help them respond to suspected child sexual abuse has been introduced by the NSPCC. The charity's Educare programme, 'Creating a culture of safety', is a distance learning scheme aimed at people working in after-school clubs, leisure facilities or for any organisation providing activities for children or for adults who are accompanied by children. The programme confronts myths about adults who pose a threat to children, as well as covering recruitment practices and what to do when witnessing worrying behaviour. The Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland has pledged that the country's Executive will protect children's rights, meet their needs and include their voices. Last month Mark Durkan met in Belfast with Olara Otunnu, the United Nations special representative for armed conflict and children, and told him the Province's proposed commissioner for children would be 'a visible sign of this commitment'. He said, 'This unique appointment will help us to meet our aim of putting Northern Ireland at the leading edge of best practice in children's issues.' He also said the Executive planned to bring forward a ten-year strategy for children and young people that would take account of the role played by parents and families.
