The decision to change the way SATS are carried out at Key Stage 1 in England's primary schools is good news for Foundation Stage practitioners. (Photograph) - An ambitious planting programme at Tannadice Nursery in Angus has paid off with what head teacher Margaret Pollok describes as a 'magnificent' wildflower meadow. She said, 'The whole thing kicked off at the beginning of the year with the planning, then we planted the seeds in April.' The nursery received a grant from Scottish Natural Heritage, but parents were so generous when they heard of the venture that there is money left over to buy bird tables and bird boxes to encourage even more wildlife to the meadow. Janet Moyles wrote a most informative feature ('Sound effects', 9 February) which I'm sure caused many early years practitioners to reflect on their practice. I am a parent partnership coach, helping education and health professionals to evaluate and build these important partnerships. With regards to reading and, in particular, phonics, I would like to tell you of the excellent partnership work that I have observed in school nursery classes and daycare nurseries that use 'Letterland' as a pre-reading scheme.

The issue of pay - the low levels - in the early years and childcare sector is never far from the top of people's minds, and, whatever the effect of the Transformation Fund money on salaries, one suspects that this will continue to be the case. In this week's issue, we report on the Scottish Executive findings that private nurseries are having severe difficulties recruiting staff, with vacancies remaining unfilled for long periods because of competition from state settings (see News, page 4) and because they can't meet wage demands.
