An initiative by the Welsh Assembly aimed at transforming how the needs of children and young people are met by service providers in Wales has been welcomed by a leading Welsh childcare organisation. Children in Wales welcomed the initiative, which is encouraging children and young people to give their views on services to the Assembly. Two documents, Children and Young People: A Framework for Partnership and Extending Entitlement, have been published by the Welsh Assembly, which said it hoped this initiative would encourage models of good practice and foster a climate in which service providers give priority to developing high-quality, innovative and responsive provision for children and young people.

BabyWOW! (Windows/Mac, CD-Rom, PCtots, 19.99), for the youngest mouseketeers, age nine months and up, is fundamentally a sound programme. Introduced by a stuffed blue sun-face toy, it presents attractive photos of objects, with a cheery voice saying the relevant word. Click on the mouse, or press any key, and something like a sheep appears - 'Sheep!' says the voice. Move on to the next activity and a colour fills the screen. 'Yellow!' it says. When you've had enough Basic Colours, move on to Basic Shapes. The advice is good too. Parents and carers are advised to sit with the child throughout, taking care to stop when their attention starts to wander.

Non-fiction 'information' books are the preferred reading of some children and your setting should include plenty Information books are an essential part of any book collection. There is growing evidence that some children, in particular boys, may be more drawn to information texts than to storybooks. Although it isn't useful to stereotype children, we do need to consider why so many boys choose information texts rather than stories. Many young boys prefer to gather facts and information in their quest to make sense of the world. Finding out about 'how things work' seems to be more satisfying to them. The knowledge makes them feel safe and offers them the security that many girls find in stories.

Parents want to be more involved and teachers want to see more of them, but how? Sharon Wallace shows one way Parents' involvement with their children's schools usually starts as soon as they enter primary school. Parent Teacher Associations (PTAs) or Home School Associations (HSAs) welcome the fresh energy of eager new parents at the beginning of a long primary school life. But nursery school heads are not usually approached, so when I suggested starting a parents' group to Mary Hart, head of my son's Margaret McMillan Nursery School, it's no surprise she was a bit sceptical about how successful it could be.
