Employers must either introduce flexible working arrangements to enable parents to meet the care needs of their children, or invest in childcare provision to allow their staff a better balance between work and home life, according to the Kids' Clubs Network. The KCN said last week that employers were more likely to offer their employees stress counselling than help them with their basic childcare needs. KCN chief executive Anne Longfield called for 'individual work-life contracts' so employees' working hours are arranged to 'match lifestyle and access to childcare'.

Joined-up services

The recently released green paper on Children at Risk contained what many of us were expecting: recommendations for measures to ensure that services for children are joined up. For out-of-school provision these recommendations have the potential to be a major catalyst to bring together the myriad of services for children into one framework that is universal but through which targeted services can be delivered. Government has invested significant amounts in out-of-school provision, but these interventions are all being delivered by different people, and are all counting different outcomes. The challenge is to join them up, to put aside the departmental boxes and to begin to develop planned, co-ordinated and integrated services. In the confusion that exists, it is often the most vulnerable children that get lost.

If floor space is tight you might want to consider the new Leander cradle from Cheeky Rascals. Designed in Denmark with the help of childcare professionals, it's reputed to be particularly useful for premature babies who are just starting to develop their sense of balance. Made from 100 per cent organic cotton and 80cm in length, you can either suspend it from a single point in the ceiling or hook it on to a wigwam-style tripod. It comes with separate mattress, straps and ceiling hook and is suitable for babies from birth to the stage at which they can sit up unaided. The full price is Pounds 125. The wigwam-style tripod is also available for 80 for those who prefer it. This is made of hardwood with an aluminium-coated steel trim. The cradle curtain (shown below) is priced 25. An additional advantage is that the cradle, mattress, curtain and straps can all be washed at 60xC.

Getting settled

A child's challenging behaviour is just one of the issues that can be dealt with co-operatively by nursery staff, parents and other agencies, as members of the Early Years Intervention Team in the London borough of Camden explain One of our early referrals was three-year-old Casper (not his real name), a much-loved only child who was experiencing significant difficulties settling in to nursery. Nursery staff found it very difficult to cope with his temper tantrums and screaming. His language skills were delayed, and every day he put himself at risk in the nursery setting, running out of rooms into the kitchen and other off-limits areas in attempts to leave the building. Staff suggested to Casper's mother, Helen, that they seek support from our team.
