Four voluntary sector projects to support children with special educational needs have been awarded 633,142 by the Scottish Executive through the SEN Innovation Grants programme. One project will provide a training package to train teachers in the use of music technology for children with SEN. Another will bring the voluntary and statutory sectors in the Highlands together in a single information, training and support service for professionals and families. Another will develop collaborative practice and training materials in inclusive education, and the fourth will train professionals and parents in person-centred planning to help parents and children participate fully in decisions that affect them.

Homecarer scheme vetoed

The Welsh Assembly said last week that it had no plans to introduce the home childcarer scheme in Wales 'at this stage'. This means that England is the only country operating the scheme, which was introduced in April, to allow registered childminders to work in the homes of the parents whose children they are caring for.

A video and CD-Rom for parents and teachers of children who have autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are being distributed to all schools, libraries and other voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland. Both resources have been developed in partnership with Parents and Professionals and Autism (PAPA), the Department of Education and Science and the Irish Society for Autism. Gerry McGinn, permanent secretary at the education department, said, 'The video is intended to be one of the first sources of information for parents following their child's diagnosis of autism. The CD-ROM provides teachers and other early years childcare professionals with a basic outline of best practice in education provision for children with ASD.' Call to make small schools exempt from apprenticeship levy

The Montessori method is based on children's innate desire to learn and focuses on educating the whole child, covering all aspects of development: intellectual, social, physical, emotional and spiritual. A Montessori teacher serves less as an instructor and more as a guide and facilitator. Because the method is based upon developmentally appropriate activities, the child often learns through the process of 'education by doing' unlike other teaching methods that instruct the child how to learn.
