Facts on fostering

I am dismayed at the comments made by Sue Seabrook of the Children's Society ('Home to stay', 30 January). As a local authority foster carer and registered community childminder working for social services, I am astounded that a professional within the adoption and fostering services could make such a sweeping statement about foster care. Nationally we are more than 8,000 foster carers short, meaning that many children who would be best served by living in a family environment are being denied the opportunity to experience 'normal' family life. The Fostering Network recently surveyed local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales, and its figures suggest that 66 per cent of responding authorities are paying at or below the Fostering Network's minimum recommended weekly allowances. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to guess who is making up the shortfall - the foster carers!

We've spent a fascinating few weeks learning about the insect world. The project began with our two- to five-year-olds heading off on a bug hunt in the nursery garden. They explored under planks of wood and around plants and used magnifying glasses to closely examine their findings. The younger children had not used magnifying glasses before and found it strange looking at the magnified objects. Staff supported them when needed and helped them to hold the creatures carefully.

BY Alison Dady (nee Wardley), a registered childminder who is a former Royal nanny On 3 April I sat down to watch the ITV programme 'Who's Looking After Your Child?'. What I saw confirmed a long-held opinion of mine - the overdue need for a national register of nannies.

Switch on to ICT Besides pointing out the benefits of sound structural engineering - bricks beat straw! - these activities are a fun way to help literacy and creative development. They are based on the Pigbox kit from the Computer Kids website on www.computerkidsonline.com. The kit contains a collection of language and literacy activities linked to the story of the Three Little Pigs. Children use a story-box template to prepare - with your help - their own written version of the traditional story and colouring templates to prepare stand-up characters for oral storytelling.
