Working mothers keep less than 10 per cent of their salaries after paying for childcare and cleaners to help them out, a survey for British Gas has found. According to the Cost of Working survey, the typical working mother earns on average 864 a month after tax and spends Pounds 808 of this on help - leaving 56 a month. The survey also found that four in ten working mothers have full-time jobs and, of those who work part-time, 60 per cent have two jobs. The mothers spend on average 262 a month on childcare and then more on children's activities, babysitters and extra cover during school holidays. Almost three-quarters said that covering the cost of everyday living rather than personal fulfilment or pleasure was their main motivation for working.

Nursery users will be seeing double when twin sisters Claire and Samantha Roberts become joint managers of a 50-place neighbourhood nursery in Northumberland that is being created by the Haltwhistle pre-school playgroup. The nursery is being built with grants of 180,000 from Northumberland EYDCP and 228,000 from the New Opportunities Fund. It will provide full-day care for children aged from six weeks to five years, as well as holding playgroup sessions and wraparound care for children aged up to 12. Claire Roberts said, 'Haltwhistle needs a full-day care facility for children, but without this help it would have remained just a dream. We will be working closely with Sure Start Western Tynedale, Haltwhistle First School, local health visitors and the Job Centre Plus to offer maximum support for families.'

The hearings, which begin in the week of 16 February, will examine how police checks into the former school caretaker's background were carried out and consider wider implications in the case. The inquiry's terms of reference are to enquire into child protection procedures in Humberside and Cambridgeshire, and 'in particular, to assess the effectiveness of the relevant intelligence-based record keeping, the vetting practices in the forces since 1995 and information sharing with other agencies'.

Nanny training and experience fits in well with a combination of skilled childcare jobs, as Helen Kewley hears Childcare professionals today cannot rely on a qualification that may be several years old, but need to continue their professional development and take up-to-date short courses, as delegates to last October's Professional Nanny conference unanimously agreed. At the same time, many of the nanny jobs being offered are part-time and it can be difficult to find enough work to generate a full-time income. So when I talked to Kelly Petriello I realised that her career could provide a model for today's childcarer.
