A shortage of childcare places in their local area is cited by nearly half of all parents in Wales in research carried out by NatCen for the Welsh Assembly Government. It found evidence of a 'perceived shortfall among parents' despite Government reports of an increase in the registered stock of childcare. Minister for Education and Lifelong Learning Jane Davidson said, 'The report highlights many issues that our strategy, Childcare is for Children, is seeking to address, and will help inform the future direction of childcare in Wales.' Government plans to expand the early years sector will be undermined by the low pay and low status of childcare professionals, the Daycare Trust has predicted. A report, Who will care?, launched at the Labour Party conference in Brighton this week, puts childcare among the lowest-paid jobs in Britain, with childcarers earning less than gardeners and cleaners. It says a day nursery manager earns an average of 13,000 to 14,000 a year, and a teacher working in a nursery class up to 18,000.

Schoolchildren in Wales have been challenged to 'think globally, act locally' and come up with initiatives to promote sustainable development in the country. The challenge was issued to all Welsh schools last week by Jane Davidson, minister for education and lifelong learning, when she launched the Our World Schools Challenge, a joint initiative with the UK Government and the WWF (formerly the Worldwide Fund for Nature). The winning school will receive 15,000 to develop their ideas and a pupil from the school will get the chance to attend next year's World Summit on Sustainable Development, held in South Africa. Every school in Wales will be sent a competition pack. Ideas must be submitted no later than 14 December and the winner will be announced in February.

Nannies who have become mothers can lend a special expertise to other families, as Helen Kewley discovers Many of the nannies I recruited in the early days of my agency now have lots of experience - and their own children. Like most mothers who want to have a balanced lifestyle that will allow them to earn an income and spend time with thier own families, they are looking for part-time work. While they insist that becoming a mother has made them more aware of the feelings of parents and thus better childcare practitioners, they often find that employers do not always recognise this. In fact, it is getting harder to place nannies who want to bring their own children to work.

Obese children may be outlived by their parents unless they are helped to start making healthy food choices at a young age, a health expert has warned. The warning by Annabel Bentley, BUPA's assistant medical director, was given as the private healthcare company published a booklet of tips and recipes to help childcarers and parents encourage young children to break bad eating habits and be more active. The booklet, Helping Toddlers to Eat Well, has been distributed across BUPA's chain of 34 Teddies Nurseries.
