Grants to teach five-and six-year-olds practical road safety skills are up for bids from local authorities across Scotland. The first phase of the Scottish Executive programme attracted successful bids from Glasgow, North Lanarkshire and West Dunbartonshire. In these areas, local co-ordinators have been appointed and pilot training schemes are expected to begin in September. Deputy transport minister Lewis Macdonald said, 'Effective and practical training is vital to ensure that children know how to use roads safely. Children from poorer areas are most at risk and these schemes will help to ensure that, no matter where they live, Scottish children stay safe on the roads.' The schemes will build on the work already carried out by the Children's Traffic Club.
