Nursery nursing is a disgrace and has no claim to be regarded as a profession. It seems to have no proper standards of practice, behaviour, investigation, education, training, vetting or discipline. Shame on you all. F McCallum, Blackpool, Lancashire

A video and CD-Rom for parents and teachers of children who have autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) are being distributed to all schools, libraries and other voluntary organisations in Northern Ireland. Both resources have been developed in partnership with Parents and Professionals and Autism (PAPA), the Department of Education and Science and the Irish Society for Autism. Gerry McGinn, permanent secretary at the education department, said, 'The video is intended to be one of the first sources of information for parents following their child's diagnosis of autism. The CD-ROM provides teachers and other early years childcare professionals with a basic outline of best practice in education provision for children with ASD.' For more details, contact PAPA on 028 9040 1729.

The Montessori Method: appropriate activities

    News

The Montessori method is based on children's innate desire to learn and focuses on educating the whole child, covering all aspects of development: intellectual, social, physical, emotional and spiritual. A Montessori teacher serves less as an instructor and more as a guide and facilitator. Because the method is based upon developmentally appropriate activities, the child often learns through the process of 'education by doing' unlike other teaching methods that instruct the child how to learn.

Nickie Brander first became concerned at the lack of drinking facilities in schools when her daughter, Cara, who is now nine, first started school. She was coming home feeling over-tired and suffering from headaches. Her urine was dark and concentrated. Cara's family doctor said that she was suffering from dehydration. Nickie is now co-ordinator of 'Water is Cool in School', a national campaign to persuade schools to increase the availability of drinking water. The campaign was launched last year by the Enuresis Resource and Information Centre (ERIC), which advises on bed-wetting and related problems. Perhaps surprisingly, one cure for bed-wetting is to drink more, not less.

Nurseries want new advice on baby jabs

The Scottish Independent Nurseries Association (SINA) has renewed its call for Government guidance for childcare workers on immunisations, following the Government's revelation that a new five-in-one vaccination for babies is to be introduced in late September. SINA made a similar plea last November amid the controversy over the combined MMR jab. The Government's announcement last week sparked fresh warnings by health campaigners that a five-in-one jab could overload babies' immune systems.

There are 24.1 pupils per teacher in nursery schools overall in Northern Ireland in the year 2002-03, a drop of 0.3 from 24.4 in 2001-02, Government statistics show. The figures show that in 2002-03 the number of pupils per teacher in nursery schools in controlled schools was 23.5. This was 1.7 lower than in the maintained sector. Controlled schools are managed by the Education and Library Boards (ELBs) and by boards of governors that are made up of transferrers - Protestants church representatives - as well as parents, teachers and relevant ELB members, while voluntary maintained schools are managed by boards of governors made up of non-trustees, who are mainly representatives of the Roman Catholic church.
