Children's Plan to enable playgrounds to be used in Easter holidays

Children will be able to use 500 new or refurbished playgrounds in this Easter's holidays. The sites, part of the first roll-out of the 235m play investment announced in the Children's Plan, will be open in 63 local authorities across England. The Government has pledged to fund 3,500 play areas and 30 adventure playgrounds in England by 2011 (News, 18 December). A list of new spaces is available at www.dcsf.gov.uk/play.

Recently I completed my CACHE Diploma in Nursery Nursing. I feel proud and privileged to have a professional award and have decided to further my career. After arduous enquiries and being turned down by several universities, I finally managed to convince my local university of the content and depth of the course I had studied. As a result, I am now looking forward to beginning a three-year BSc degree programme to train to become a midwife.

As the Government considers giving tax incentives for employer- supported childcare, could this herald a better deal for working parents? Alison Mercer reports The Treasury is due to publish a consultation document that will explore new tax and national insurance incentives for employer-supported childcare this month (January). Until this document, Balancing Work and Family Life, comes out, it is hard to know what options the Government is considering.
