We've spent a fascinating few weeks learning about the insect world. The project began with our two- to five-year-olds heading off on a bug hunt in the nursery garden. They explored under planks of wood and around plants and used magnifying glasses to closely examine their findings. The younger children had not used magnifying glasses before and found it strange looking at the magnified objects. Staff supported them when needed and helped them to hold the creatures carefully.

Marks & Spencer is joining forces with the national educational charity I CAN to raise funds for more than 1 million children in the UK with communication difficulties. The campaign launches in all 312 M&S stores in May, when children will be invited to place their hopes and dreams for the next 50 years on to a Rainbow of Hope. For each of the first 50,000 hopes made, the retailer will donate 1 to I CAN, an officially-designated charity for the Golden Jubilee.

Nanny register is long overdue

Switch on to ICT Besides pointing out the benefits of sound structural engineering - bricks beat straw! - these activities are a fun way to help literacy and creative development. They are based on the Pigbox kit from the Computer Kids website on www.computerkidsonline.com. The kit contains a collection of language and literacy activities linked to the story of the Three Little Pigs. Children use a story-box template to prepare - with your help - their own written version of the traditional story and colouring templates to prepare stand-up characters for oral storytelling.

Sixty under-fours from childminding groups in Leeds raised enough money to feed all 200 pupils at Kawale Primary School in Malawi for a year by taking part in sponsored toddles.
