(Photograph) - Children at Clutha Day Nursery in Kinning Park, Glasgow, learn how to look after their teeth in a scheme by Greater Glasgow NHS to tackle poor oral health in the city. The scheme promotes dental hygiene by encouraging children to cut out sugary snacks and drinks and brush their teeth at least once a day. It has proved so successful in reducing tooth decay rates in under-fives at nurseries that the pilot , which has been running for the past five years, will now be extended to nursery children across Glasgow.. Asking children for their views provides some startling insights into how nursery staff can improve practice, a pioneering Scottish study has found. Stirling Council has published a practical guide, Children as Partners, which advises that nursery-age children can be consulted on a range of issues such as curriculum planning, staff deployment and purchasing resources - and that nurseries must be prepared to act on what they find out.

Children's charities on both sides of the Irish border have called for the vetting of all childcarers in Ireland and for tougher legislation to protect children from abuse. Last week the Northern Ireland branch of the National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC) and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) said they wanted to see all people who work with children be vetted because of the need to tackle child abuse on an all-Ireland basis and give all children equal protection under the law. At present childcarers are vetted only in Northern Ireland and there is no equivalent system in the south.
