Service of hope

Nanny Paula Jackson would like to invite people to a special service of thanksgiving and hope this month for anyone whose life has been touched by meningitis, whether as a carer, patient, parent, relative or friend. Paula looked after a child who contracted meningitis and fortunately survived, but the experience left Paula traumatised and depressed - not least because of an attitude expressed by some other people that she shouldn't care so much about a child not her own. 'Childcarers need to grieve and come to terms with experiences too,' she says. 'The idea behind this service is to bring together in a positive way people from all angles who have been affected by meningitis, rather than a remembrance service.' The service, 'Hope', will be held at 2pm on Saturday 31 March at Christchurch, Waterden Road, Guildford, Surrey, and will feature solo and choir singing and a candle-lighting ceremony. For more details contact Paula on 01483 577 232.

The cover of the newly-published The Nanny Handbook: How to find and keep the best nannies and au pairs shows a child's drawing of a female figure with a big pink heart on her chest. This perhaps illustrates what author Karen House says is its attempt to include the perspectives of nannies, employers and children alike - a fresh approach in the nanny guidebook market. Karen and her co-author Louise Sheppard both work in human resources and personnel businesses, as well as having employed their share of nannies, so they have plenty of professional experience of interviewing job candidates and giving employment advice. When told that nannies found some guidebooks 'out of date', she agreed, and said that when she and Louise decided to write their book, this was one of the things that motivated them.

The wacky relay saw more than 20 young people travel 130 miles passing the 'baton', containing responses to the charter, across Gateshead's five neighbourhood areas.

In my view: Support is appreciated

Support staff in schools have for years been treated as the poor relations in the education system, with low and unequal pay, often only in term-time, bad working conditions and few training opportunities. All too often, they are expected to take on far too much responsibility.

Combining objects to create new uses is a crucial part of children's development, and should be as free as possible from adult interference, says Philip Waters Think of 'Steptoe and Son's' yard and it could describe the state of my back garden at the moment. If you were brave enough to venture out there you would find old timbers with rusty nails, a bathtub, bits of tiles, pipes, bricks, and goodness knows what else. And while my partner is probably cringing at the thought of my DIY enthusiasm on renovating the bathroom, my children, and half the neighbourhood's children, are in their element making things from all the junk.

As spring approaches most of us get the urge to brighten up or change our environment. Whether you are contemplating buying new furniture, restocking your toy cupboards or wondering what you can do about your less-than-inspiring outdoor area, do nothing before you have thoroughly perused this issue. It's jammed full of new products, resources and contacts to help you make the changes you want. The renovation of school playgrounds is currently big news in the education world and we have chosen to make it one of our main stories, too. True, much playground equipment can be prohibitively expensive, but there is a number of modular units which can be added to as and when funds are available, so we hope we have found something to suit everyone's budget. It's amazing how original many schools have been - read about some of them on page 28.

Early years inspectors will have to complete a three-day training course on how to carry out their procedures, following the end of the two-year inspection cycle on 31 March. The training, which will be rolled out to 900 Ofsted inspectors over the next six weeks, will prepare them to collect evidence and make judgements under the new inspection framework announced last September. Inspectors will also be introduced to new software to improve the efficiency of recording evidence and writing reports.

Ten green bottles

An independent selection of new products and resources The Green Bottle Unit is a recently launched enterprise from the award-winning charity Free Form Arts Trust, in association with glass artist David Watson. Set up to produce 100 per cent recycled glass tiles, bricks and paviors from items like TV and VDU screens, as well as from the ubiquitous bottle bank contents, the Unit has taken two years to develop a safe, attractive and ecologically sound alternative to bricks and mortar. If you plan to use the blocks where skidding could be an issue a glass frit with raised relief is recommended. The blocks have been found to be stronger than equivalent size precast concrete paviors. The blocks are available in green, white, brown and blue - because they are hand-made, their appearance varies in pattern and shade. They come in a range of dimensions, priced from around 16 per brick.

Nurseries are being asked by the Inland Revenue to help catch cheating parents - while losing money. Simon Vevers reports The Inland Revenue says there is 'no evidence whatsoever of an increase in tax credits fraud' - a claim which is baffling many childcare providers, not least because the Inland Revenue is increasingly asking them to check whether parents are sending children to their setting and are therefore entitled to state support.
