Childminders rise to new regulations

Most childminders in Wales are now meeting regulation requirements, amid a continued rise in daycare standards across the country, according to the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW) annual report. A voluntary organisation that promotes inclusive play opportunities for children across London is fighting closure because of funding cuts under the London Councils' grant scheme (News, 12 October). London Play has written to political party leaders and the capital's 33 council leaders asking for support. London Councils' grant committee has said that increasing access to play and physical activity for children and young people should no longer be a funding priority.

Parents will be able to make online checks on the background of any prospective nanny under new legislation to vet all those working with children. Under measures set out in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Bill, published last week, domestic employers will be able to check whether nannies, private tutors, music teachers or care workers have been banned from working with children.

The decision to change the way SATS are carried out at Key Stage 1 in England's primary schools is good news for Foundation Stage practitioners. Greater emphasis on teacher assessment of pupils rather than formal examinations should mean less pressure on nursery and reception classes to 'prepare' children for SATS (see News, page 4).

(Photograph) - An ambitious planting programme at Tannadice Nursery in Angus has paid off with what head teacher Margaret Pollok describes as a 'magnificent' wildflower meadow. She said, 'The whole thing kicked off at the beginning of the year with the planning, then we planted the seeds in April.' The nursery received a grant from Scottish Natural Heritage, but parents were so generous when they heard of the venture that there is money left over to buy bird tables and bird boxes to encourage even more wildlife to the meadow. Streatham MP Keith Hill and Baroness Thornton hosted a party at the House of Commons to celebrate the announcement.
