Scottish nursery owners have warned that changes to the application process brought in when the new Working Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit were introduced in April have left the system wide open to abuse and that tax credit fraud may now be on the increase. In a change from the old system, nurseries have no way of knowing whether parents are claiming the childcare element of the tax credit, because the claim form no longer requires the nursery to confirm that the child is attending sessions. The onus is now solely on parents to complete the nursery's details on the form, including the name of the approved childcare provider, the registration number and registering body.

The TUC said last week that high temperatures meant an increased risk of accidents at work and illness, and called on the Government to impose a maximum temperature of 30oC to protect workers from 'sweatshop conditions'. It said companies should provide all premises with air conditioning or fans when the maximum temperature was reached. The Department of Health has also issued health tips to help people keep cool and avoid heat-related illnesses. These include staying in the shade or indoors -especially between the hours of 11am and 3pm, using a minimum of factor 15 sunscreen, covering up when in the sun and drinking far more water.
