More than 40 per cent of health visitor training places have been cut in England this year, according to a healthcare trade union. Amicus/Community Practitioners' and Health Visitors' Association (CPHVA) surveyed 43 higher education institutions and over three quarters responded after they invoked the Freedom of Information Act. The union found that the number of health visitors trained in 2006-07 was 329, dropping from 554 in 2005-06, despite about 800 applications for places. There was also a 10 per cent fall in school nurses training and a 51 per cent drop in training places for district nurses.

As we say farewell to Harry's column, he has started attending pre-school, which he loves, particularly the water tray. In fact, on his first morning a member of staff commented that had there been a snorkel available he probably would have used it! Harry is developing well. He is sociable, contented, and physically very active. His speech is clear, with an extensive vocabulary, and he adjusts well to most situations. Harry is interested in all he sees, asking questions, experimenting and investigating. He likes to see inside things and help with DIY jobs around the house. He has learned a lot from his older sister, Jasmine, and mostly they play well together. He is also very caring towards baby brother Alfie, ensuring that he has toys and explaining to him what he needs to do.

Hillingdon PCT, whose 54m debt is the highest in the country, is poised to contract out key services as part of a drastic cost-saving exercise. Councillor David Simmonds, cabinet member for education and children's services, said, 'We anticipate that they are not going to be able to remain the lead agency and that responsibility will have to go elsewhere.'

She developed a hacking cough that didn't go away, and repeated trips to the doctor only confirmed that she didn't have a chest infection. When Jessica was one, she was choking and not breathing properly, so an ambulance had to be called to take her to hospital in the middle of the night. Despite this emergency, it was only when Jessica was two that the problem was diagnosed as asthma and she was put on medication to help prevent attacks.

Private critique

Comments in the news story 'All-day school plans anger nursery group' (22 November) are typical of the private sector. Any possible threat to their future profitability is poorly shielded by their scaremongering rhetoric. The facts remain that large numbers of private nurseries and daycare centres in Scotland are substandard, with many unqualified or poorly-qualified staff. Havens of bad practice, many private establishments not only fail to give children the care and education that they deserve, they fail to give their staff the pay and conditions that they deserve.
