Boom time for staff childcare vouchers

The number of companies giving childcare vouchers to employees has more than doubled since 2004 to 42 per cent, according to research by Accor Services. The employee benefits company predicts almost 60 per cent of companies will be offering vouchers by mid-2007. It interviewed 170 businesses, each with more than 500 employees. Around 42 per cent run schemes, up from 18 per cent in 2004.

Victims of domestic abuse and their children will receive enhanced protection and support under the Domestic Violence, Crime and Victims Bill, which had its third reading in the House of Commons last week. Home Secretary David Blunkett reaffirmed the Government's commitment to overhaul domestic violence law, giving tougher powers to the police and the courts to protect victims and prosecute abusers.

Childcare experts are calling for an 'urgent national debate' to ensure children under three with working mothers receive the most appropriate care. In a letter to the Daily Telegraph, Sir Richard Bowlby, president of the Centre for Child Mental Health, and seven other signatories, including authors and psychologists Sue Gerhardt, Steve Biddulph and Sue Palmer, said that although nurseries strive to provide 'continuity in personalised care-giving', many 'fall short'.

National guide has Foundation advice

The first national guidelines for religious education in England's schools were published last week. The non-statutory national framework, intended to support and improve RE teaching for pupils from three to 19, was developed by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority at the request of the DfES, with major faith and religious education groups across the UK, following consultation earlier this year.

The third reading of the Children Bill took place in the House of Commons on Tuesday (2 November). More than 20 Labour MPs have called for a free vote on the contentious Clause 56 that would allow parents to lightly smack their children but not cause wounding or actual bodily harm. Backbenchers, supported by children's charities, want an opportunity to vote freely in favour of a complete smacking ban.

Nord Anglia, which owns the UK's largest nursery group Leapfrog, has denied receiving an approach from investment company Principle Capital Partners seeking to buy the company. However, it admitted that it is 'seeking clarification of their intentions'. Principle Capital Partners recently said that it is 'considering all its options' relating to its more than 24 per cent holding in Nord Anglia, which could include an offer being made. Nord Anglia will announce its preliminary results for the year ended 31 August 2006 on 15 November.
